Introduction

The CARE Climate and Resilience Academy  is a unique learning platform for both trainers & trainees. The platform aims to give people the necessary knowledge to understand resilience and climate change so that they are better able to tackle its causes and consequences, and provide trainers with tools to facilitate the training of others.

CARE's definition of resilience: the capacity to deal with shocks and stresses, manage risk and transform lives and systems in response to new hazards. In the concept of resilience, we take into account all types of shocks or stresses: geophysical, meteorological, economic, political, social, technological or health and how they are influenced by climate change.

Institutional background and trainer

The learning and training resources are directly based on CARE’s 17+ years of experience in resiliencecommunity-based adaptation, climate advocacy, and in our own efforts to become a climate-smart organization. Currently, the academy focuses on the following thematic areas: resilience, becoming climate-smart, climate change adaptation, climate & gender, climate advocacy.

The resources build on existing knowledge and experience and offer new skills and tools that enable participants to better tackle the complexity of the problem.

Who would find this useful?

The CARE Climate & Resilience Academy is open to any user who wants to engage with and learn more about climate change and resilience, and to climate experts who want to access editable training materials. It offers a number of resources in English that are also being translated into Spanish and French.

Training material

You will find 3 main types of content: short online courses, learning journeys, and trainer packs.

  • Short online courses: Online courses that take 30 minutes to 2 hours to complete.

Introduction to Climate Change : 2 hours – English – Beginner

Climate change is the biggest threat of our time. But what exactly is climate change, and what is causing it? What are the effects of climate change and how is it preventing the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals? What is the link between climate change and gender? This course will answer these questions, making you familiar with the concepts of climate justice and climate mitigation and adaptation.

Becoming a Climate-Smart Organisation – 1 hour – English – Beginner

As climate-change is directly increasing poverty and inequalities, it is important for every organization to reduce its own greenhouse gas emissions. The aim of this online course is twofold: (1) create understanding on why organizations (specifically Civil Society Organizations) must reduce their emissions and (2) provide useful tools and tips to reduce offices’ emissions.

Increasing Resilience Approach and Marker – 2 hours – English - Beginner

Increasing Resilience is one of the three elements of CARE’s integrated approach, and is key to addressing the underlying causes of poverty and social injustice. This course will help you get a better understanding of CARE’s Increasing Resilience approach and how to assess resilience integration with the help of CARE’s Resilience Marker.

  • Learning journeys: 1-year paid interactive courses which require an application and combine live and interactive e-learning classroom lessons led by CARE’s climate change and resilience experts, including videos, quizzes, podcasts, homework and an individual coaching period to apply the learning. The next journey will open in September 2020 and will be accessible to external participants as well as CARE staff.

Climate Change Adaptation Learning Journey  - 1 year – English – Intermediate

This 1-year interactive course on Climate Change Adaptation combines online courses, peer to peer exchanges and coaching to change your training experience into a learning journey. It will help participants increase their knowledge on climate change adaptation and help them get a better understanding of how to put CARE’s main climate change adaptation approaches into practice at the community level.

Climate Advocacy Learning Journey 1 year – English – Intermediate

This 1-year interactive course on climate advocacy will help participants increase their knowledge on climate advocacy and help them get a better understanding of how to put CARE’s main climate advocacy approaches into practice.

  • Trainer packs: The packs consist of a set of materials that can be tailored to facilitate interactive and inspiring in-person trainings on climate change and resilience-related topics. These packs are entirely free and include a training agenda, PowerPoint template, games, videos, quizzes, lists of additional resources, and facilitation tips.

Becoming a Climate-Smart Organization Trainer Pack – 2 hours – English and Spanish - Beginner

Limiting global warming below 1.5 degrees Celsius will require a tremendous level of effort, and a departure from business as usual at every level of society, including civil society organiations. Are you trying to make your organization climate-smart and would you like others to support you in this effort? This trainer pack will help you raise your colleagues’ awareness on climate change impacts and motivate them to join together and identify mitigation actions to take collectively.

Resilience Trainer Pack – 1 day – English - Beginner

Increasing resilience is one of the key CARE approaches to eliminating poverty and inequality. This resilience marker trainer pack offers resources to facilitate an interactive and practice-oriented one day training that will familiarize participants with CARE’s resilience approach and teach them how to use CARE’s resilience marker in a way that improves the resilience of their projects.
