Mitigation: Turkey's Intended Nationally Determined Contributions pledge an up-to-21% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions from its business as usual scenario, by 2030. This will be accomplished through energy efficiency improvements and the increased use of all renewables (particularly nuclear energy). Mitigation activities will also involve expanding and protecting land-cover and forests, improved waste management, sustainable transport policies, and efficient building practices. Adaptation: Turkey's Intended Nationally Determined Contributions do not explicitly address adaptation, however national strategy suggests that Turkey's adaptation priority areas are: water resources management, the agriculture sector and food security, ecosystem services, biological diversity and forestry, natural disaster risk management, public health, and crosscutting issue across sectors. Consult Turkey's National Climate Change Adaptation Strategy and Action Plan for additional information. International Climate and Environmental Commitments: The Paris Agreement (Signed), United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (Party), Kyoto Protocol to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (Party), United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (Party), Convention on Biological Diversity (Party), Convention on the International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Flora and Fauna (Party), Convention on Wetlands of International Importance Especially as Waterfowl Habitat (Party)

Turkey's NDC-SDG Connections

Turkey is an upper-middle income developing country located along the Black Sea, the Aegean Sea, and the Mediterranean, with varied climate zones. Turkey's vulnerability to climate change is less serious than that of many other countries. However, given Turkey's level of economic development, rising population, and emissions, it has an important role to play in global climate change mitigation and adaptation. Turkey committed to a climate change response that does not limit continued economic development but does reduce emissions. This requires focusing on energy, which is the sector responsible for the majority of Turkish emissions.
