Migration: Togo predicts its ongoing efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, particularly in terms of agriculture, land use, and energy, will result in an overall 11.4% reduction of greenhouse gas emissions by 2030 when compared with Togo's total 2030 emissions based on the baseline year (2010). With external technical and financial support Togo could conditionally commit to a 31.14% reduction in emissions from Togo's total 2030 emissions based on the 2010 baseline year. These conditional reductions would be achieved through furthering the use of biomass in households, greater use of solar electricity, improvements in emissions from livestock and farming, and changes in land use, land-use change, and the forestry sector. Adaptation: Development and adaptation are Togo's priorities in the context of climate change, and Togo is particularly invested in pursuing activities that have co-benefits with mitigation. Adaptation activities include encouraging energy efficiency and carbon-lean technology, sustainable water resource management, building resilience in the production systems and agricultural sector, protecting the coastal zones, and adapting cities and buildings to climate change. International Climate and Environmental Commitments: The Paris Agreement (Party), United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (Party), Kyoto Protocol to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (Party), United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (Party), Convention on Biological Diversity (Party), Convention on the International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Flora and Fauna (Party), Convention on Wetlands of International Importance Especially as Waterfowl Habitat (Party)
Summary
Togo is a coastal west African country, characterized by coastal plains, marshes, and lakes. Togo is currently facing serious socioeconomic challenges, worsened by political instability in recent years and natural resource depletion (including deforestation). Climate change may worsen these existing challenges, leading to worsened coastal erosion, the spreading of illnesses, food insecurity and water scarcity, and energy issues from a lack of wood resource.
