Migration: Sierra Leone's mitigation activities focus on promoting green growth, and the country is currently working to integrate climate change into national policy, set standards for environmental health related to air, water, and soil quality, expand the use of clean energy, promote energy efficiency, improve waste management, and decrease transport emissions. With international financial and technical support, Sierra Leone is committed to maintaining emissions levels at a low rate through 2035, around the world average, and achieving neutrality by 2050. Adaptation: For Sierra Leone adaptation is an important response to climate change. Key adaptation approaches include: rangeland and pasture management; crops and livestock management; restoration of degraded land; coastal and marine ecosystem management; early warning and disaster preparedness systems; integrating climate change into health; insurance and social safety nets; resilience in tourism; resilience of private sector adaptation in the extractive sector; and mainstreaming climate change into land reforms. International Climate and Environmental Commitments: The Paris Agreement (Party), United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (Party), Kyoto Protocol to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (Party), United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (Party), Convention on Biological Diversity (Party), Convention on the International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Flora and Fauna (Party), Convention on Wetlands of International Importance Especially as Waterfowl Habitat (Party)

Sierra Leone's NDC-SDG Connections

Sierra Leone is a coastal West African nation, characterized by wooded hills, mountains, a plateau, and coastal systems, with the majority of its populations living in rural areas. Sierra Leone has significant natural resources, with agriculture being its largest economic sector followed by the rapidly growing mining sector. However, despite this wealth, Sierra Leone faces significant socioeconomic challenges including high unemployment and particularly low life expectancy that was exacerbated by the recent Ebola crisis. Climate change in Sierra Leone may exacerbate existing food security and livelihood issues. Sierra Leone's climatic and geographic context, and low capacity to adapt given its socioeconomic context, makes the country very vulnerable to climate change.
