Mitigation: Niger has committed to an unconditional 2.5% greenhouse gas emissions reduction for the business as usual scenario, by 2020, and an additional 1% reduction by 2030. With external financial and technical support Niger has made a conditional commitment to a 25% reduction of greenhouse gas emissions by 2020 and a total 34.6% reduction by 2030 (or a reduction of 33,4000 GgCO2e). Niger approaches mitigation as a way of sustainably promoting growth and extending needed social services. Mitigation efforts will focus on energy and land use (agriculture and forestry). Within the energy sector mitigation will take the form of electrification and improving access to electricity, encouraging the use of biogas and biofuels for cooking, employing renewable energy technology, and improving the efficiency of energy use and infrastructure across sectors. Within agriculture and forestry mitigation will focus on sustainable land management and use to protect ecosystems and sequester carbon. Adaptation: Given the economic and livelihood risks posed by climate change in Niger, adaptation is a national priority. Adaptation efforts will focus on the restoration of harvested and forested land, natural regeneration, dunes fixation, planting of multiuse species, and hedgerows. International Climate and Environmental Commitments: The Paris Agreement (Party), United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (Party), Kyoto Protocol to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (Party), United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (Party), Convention on Biological Diversity (Party), Convention on the International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Flora and Fauna (Party), Convention on Wetlands of International Importance Especially as Waterfowl Habitat (Party)

Niger's NDC-SDG Connections

Niger is a Sahelian country, located on the edge of the Sahara and largely desert, with highly variable rainfall. Niger also experiences droughts, flood, and locust infestations that contribute to food insecurity. Niger has significant socioeconomic development needs, and its economy is currently very dependent on the agropastoral sector. These contextual factors make Niger very vulnerable to the impacts of climate change, which may undermine economic growth, impact agriculture production, and exacerbate natural disasters like droughts and floods.
