[Disambiguation: singular used for tagging descriptions of established networks.]
A network is a group of people or organisations that are connected and interact with one another to work towards a common goal. Networks can be social, professional, thematic etc. in their nature. They can enable connections and interaction between individual actors that benefit the wider network, including peer support, knowledge sharing, cooperation, and coordination.
Wenger, E., Trayner, B., and de Laat, M. (2011) highlight the value of networks for enabling learning. They state: "The network aspect refers to the set of relationships, personal interactions, and connections among participants who have personal reasons to connect. It is viewed as a set of nodes and links with affordances for learning, such as information flows, helpful linkages, joint problem solving, and knowledge creation."
