Mitigation: Jordan has committed to an unconditional 1.5% reduction of greenhouse gas emissions by 2030, compared to their business as usual scenario. However, with additional financial and technical aid Jordan could commit to a reduction of an addition 12.5% by 2030. In the energy sector Jordan intends to produce these reductions through a diversification of energy supply, expansion of renewables, and efficiency improvements across industries. Transport is a growing and significant emissions source in Jordan, mitigation approaches include increasing the use of public transport and reducing vehicle emissions. Within the waste management sector, Jordan intends to develop a system for sorting, reusing, and recycling that will support mitigation. To reduce emissions from agriculture Jordan will afforest barren forest areas. Finally within the water sector Jordan will introduce renewables as an energy source for the water supply system, while encouraging efficient energy use in the sector. Adaptation: Climate change adaptation in the water sector is a primary concern for Jordan. Water scarcity is a major challenge for Jordan's sustainable development that will be worsened by climate change. Water sector adaptation activities include, securing residential water supply, irrigation, and water quality, and securing water access despite socio-economic issues. Adaptation activities will also be required to protect public health, ecosystems and biodiversity, and agriculture and food security. Jordan targets adaptation action to address both climate change insecurity and sustainable development challenges, looking to undertake adaptation projects that have a social inclusion dimension. International Climate and Environmental Commitments: The Paris Agreement (Party), United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (Party), Kyoto Protocol to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (Party), United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (Party), Convention on Biological Diversity (Party), Convention on the International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Flora and Fauna (Party), Convention on Wetlands of International Importance Especially as Waterfowl Habitat (Party)

Jordan's NDC-SDG Connections

Jordan is likely to be particularly impacted by climate change, specifically in terms of water scarcity and drought. Water availability is already an issue in Jordan, but climate change is projected to lead to higher temperatures, and reduced precipitation, prompting more drought events that will pose a serious risk to individual water access as well as Jordan's agricultural sector. Jordan is particularly vulnerable to the impacts of climate change as a result of its development needs, dependency on importing energy, and significant migrant population from neighboring countries.
