Mitigation: The majority of Indonesia's emissions result from energy, land use (like peat and forestry), and transport. Indonesia has pledged to independently reduce emissions by 26% from their business as usual scenario by 2020, and to further reduce by 41% with international support. By 2030 Indonesia intends to increase independent reductions to 29% and maintains the possibility of a conditional 41% reduction.

Adaptation: Climate change may endanger Indonesia's development sectors (agriculture, water, energy security, forestry, maritime and fisheries, health, public service, infrastructure, and urban system), the national government intends to facilitate adaptation in these sectors by building local capacity, improving resource management, operationalizing relevant technologies, and integrating adaptation and disaster risk reduction and planning.

International Climate and Environmental Commitments: The Paris Agreement (Party), United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (Party), Kyoto Protocol to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (Party), United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (Party), Convention on Biological Diversity (Party), Convention on the International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Flora and Fauna (Party), Convention on Wetlands of International Importance Especially as Waterfowl Habitat (Party)

Summary

Indonesia is one of the largest archipelagic states, the 4th most populous country, and characterized by diverse climate and geography. Indonesia is rich in natural resources, with extensive tropical rainforests, that it is highly dependent on economically. Indonesia, and the natural resources it depends on, are also at risk of negative climate change impacts, particularly more frequent natural disasters. Indonesia’s geographic and socioeconomic context means it has a pivotal role in global climate change mitigation, and significant adaptation needs.
