Mitigation: Guyana’s approach to climate change mitigation focuses on pursing a green economy through low-emission economic-development, emphasizing activities within the energy and forestry sectors. Unconditionally Guyana commits to continued efforts on sustainable and inclusive forestry, timber industry improvements, the expansion of hydropower and bioenergy, and facilitating energy efficiency. With financial, technical, and capacity building support from the international community Guyana could pursue other mitigation efforts related to avoiding deforestation through programs like REDD+, comprehensively improving forest governance and legality, and developing a 100% renewable power supply by 2025. Adaptation: Guyana faces significant climate risks, making climate change adaptation a priority. Adaptation efforts focus on renewable energy, forestry, and coastal ecosystems, for example mangrove restoration programmed along the vulnerable coast. Other strategies target the agricultural sector, including the development of crop varieties that are flood and drought resistant and the introduction of new agricultural techniques. Finally, disaster risk management strategies include upgrading infrastructure and other assets to protect against flooding, and the development of an early warning system. International Climate and Environmental Commitments: The Paris Agreement (Party), United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (Party), Kyoto Protocol to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (Party), United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (Party), Convention on Biological Diversity (Party), Convention on the International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Flora and Fauna (Party), Convention on Wetlands of International Importance Especially as Waterfowl Habitat (Party)

Guyana's NDC-SDG Connections

Guyana is a country on the north coast of South America, including low coastal areas, savannahs, forested highlands, and sand and clay hills. The country is heavily forested and has maintained one of the lowest deforestation rates on Earth. Despite its natural resource abundance (tropical forests, fertile agricultural land, and gold available for mining) Guyana is less economically developed than other South American countries. Guyana also faces significant climate risks. Its low-lying coastline is particularly vulnerable to flooding and sea level rise and coastal agriculture and aquaculture is at risk from saline intrusion. Environmental actions that can boost incomes and fund development whilst addressing mitigation, like financing through forest conservation agreements (including the REDD+ model), are therefore highly relevant.
