Mitigation: Guyana’s approach to climate change mitigation focuses on pursing a green economy through low-emission economic-development, emphasizing activities within the energy and forestry sectors. Unconditionally Guyana commits to continued efforts on sustainable and inclusive forestry, timber industry improvements, the expansion of hydropower and bioenergy, and facilitating energy efficiency. With financial, technical, and capacity building support from the international community Guyana could pursue other mitigation efforts related to avoiding deforestation through programs like REDD+, comprehensively improving forest governance and legality, and developing a 100% renewable power supply by 2025. Adaptation: Guyana faces significant climate risks, making climate change adaptation a priority. Adaptation efforts focus on renewable energy, forestry, and coastal ecosystems, for example mangrove restoration programmed along the vulnerable coast. Other strategies target the agricultural sector, including the development of crop varieties that are flood and drought resistant and the introduction of new agricultural techniques. Finally, disaster risk management strategies include upgrading infrastructure and other assets to protect against flooding, and the development of an early warning system.
