Conducting Gender Analysis to Inform National Adaptation Plan (NAP) Processes
This briefing note describes the rationale and approach that NAP Global Network has taken in supporting NAP-focused gender analyses in six African countries.

Mitigation: Guinea has committed to a 13% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions by 2030, when compared to 1994 emissions and excluding land-use change and forestry. Guinea is currently a carbon sink, and committed to maintaining that status. Guinea will achieve the stated reduction, and contribute to global efforts to decarbonize, through sustainable development powered by actions within the energy, extraction, and forestry sectors. Guinea will look specifically at renewable energy expansion, energy efficiency, climate compatible mining, and sustainable forestry. Effective mitigation will require external support with technical knowledge, financial resources, and building human capital. Adaptation: Adaptation to climate change will be critical to minimizing the impact of changing rain patterns, rising temperatures, and rising sea levels on economic development and livelihoods. Particularly vulnerable areas and sectors, that require adaptation, include crop and livestock farming, water supply, and coastal and forest zones. Guinea currently plans to facilitate adaptation by preserving water quality, encouraging ecosystem conservation, building the resilience of coastal communities, and supporting attempts to development agropastoral approaches that are resilient to climate change impacts. International Climate and Environmental Commitments: The Paris Agreement (Party), United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (Party), Kyoto Protocol to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (Party), United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (Party), Convention on Biological Diversity (Party), Convention on the International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Flora and Fauna (Party), Convention on Wetlands of International Importance Especially as Waterfowl Habitat (Party)
Summary
Guinea faces serious social, economic and political challenges, worsened in the recent past by the Ebola public health crisis. Development, and food security, are significant national concerns. Guinea has considerable natural resource wealth to support development - including forests, mineral resources, and agriculturally productive land - however climate change is likely to threaten these resources and to increase their use and rate of exhaustion. Guinea is at risk of falling average rainfall, an increase in average temperatures, and rising sea levels. Climate change mitigation and adaptation will be critical to the country's continued development and the extension of support and resources to its citizens.
