Mitigation: Gambia has unconditionally committed to climate mitigation by focusing on the following key areas: renewable energy for lighting, communications, public health, and water supply, as well as through forest conservation and expansion. By 2025 Gambia anticipates renewable energy could reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 78.5 Gg CO2e, while afforestation produces reductions of about 275.4 Gg CO2e. Further mitigation actions would require external support in the form of financing, capacity building, and technology transfers. With such support Gambia could pursue mitigation activities related to improving rice production, increasing energy efficiency (including improving the transmission and uses of energy for lighting, transport, and cooking), methane capture and flaring, and recycling and composting. Adaptation: Gambia is implementing an overarching program of awareness raising, public education, strategy development, and governance capacity building to shape its adaptation actions. Adaptation activities under consideration include improving the resilience of urban infrastructure and climate proofing infrastructure generally, adapting the agriculture system, building resilience in coastal and riverine economies and communities, and restoration in the Gambia watershed. International Climate and Environmental Commitments: The Paris Agreement (Party), United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (Party), Kyoto Protocol to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (Party), United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (Party), Convention on Biological Diversity (Party), Convention on the International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Flora and Fauna (Party), Convention on Wetlands of International Importance Especially as Waterfowl Habitat (Party)

Gambia's NDC-SDG Connections

Gambia is a coastal West African country, divided by the Gambia river. Economically, Gambia is a considered a least developed country. Its economy is largely reliant on the service sector, as well as the agricultural sector, and relatively undiversified. Gambia's socioeconomic development challenges, as well as its dependence on sectors heavily impacted by climate and price shocks, makes the country vulnerable to climate change. Gambia has been particularly engaged in climate change diplomacy and policy action.
