Mitigation: Djibouti has committed unconditionally to a 40% reduction of greenhouse gas emissions by 2030 compared to the business as usual scenario, with international support this reduction could be increased by a further 20%. Djibouti's unconditional mitigation actions include connecting an electrical line with Ethiopia, building onshore wind farms, installing photovoltaic plants, further exploiting geothermal energy potential, constructing a new railway line, enhancing energy efficiency projects for buildings, and reducing the energy consumption of public buildings. Conditional mitigation efforts include connecting additional electrical lines with Ethiopia, thermal rehabilitation of buildings, distributing low energy light bulbs, auditing administrative buildings, reducing energy consumption by public buildings, reforestation with silvopasture practices, reducing fuel wood consumption for cooking, and developing and maintaining two wheel vehicles. Adaptation: Given Djibouti's considerable vulnerability to climate change, adaptation is a priority and requires significant domestic and international investment. Key adaptation priorities are the reduction of vulnerability to drought, protection against rising sea levels, improved access to water, biodiversity protection, and the greater resilience of rural populations International Climate and Environmental Commitments: The Paris Agreement (Party), United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (Party), Kyoto Protocol to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (Party), United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (Party), Convention on Biological Diversity (Party), Convention on the International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Flora and Fauna (Party), Convention on Wetlands of International Importance Especially as Waterfowl Habitat (Party)

Djibouti's NDC-SDG Connections

Djibouti is a least developed coastal country, located in the Horn of Africa. Djibouti has a semi-tropical desert climate, and is characterized by plateaus, plains, and mountains from volcanic activity. Djibouti is susceptible to natural disasters and drought, climate change is likely to result in further extreme drought, high temperatures, sea level rise, flash floods, and water and soil salinization. Djibouti also faces considerable socioeconomic challenges related to poverty, economic development, and internal and external political conflict. Djibouti's physical, and socioeconomic, context makes it particularly susceptible to climate change impacts.
