Mitigation: Benin has unconditionally committed to reducing agriculture and energy sector greenhouse gas emissions by 3.62%. With international technical, financial, and capacity building support Benin could increase reductions within energy and agriculture by 12.55% and by afforestation and limiting deforestation increase its carbon sequestration potential to make an additional 76.7% conditional mitigation contribution. Specific sectoral mitigation activities include climate smart agriculture, improved irrigation, renewable and natural gas-based electricity generation, expanding electricity access, promoting wood-energy and butane gas energy when and as appropriate, and enhanced forest management, conservation, reforestation, and afforestation. Adaptation: Adaptation is important to Benin's future development, given its vulnerability to climate change. Benin's overarching efforts to promote adaptation focus on improving adaptive capacity by building the skills and knowledge to integrate climate change in all planning and management, mobilizing financial resources to support adaptation, and building a socio-economic base through employment and income generation that allows for resilience and adaptation. Specific adaptation activities focus on diversification and durability in the agriculture sector, water resource management, facilitating afforestation and reducing deforestation, and reducing human and economic vulnerability to coastal erosion and sea-level rise.
