Mitigation: Bangladesh proposes an unconditional 5%, or 12 MtCO2e, reduction of greenhouse gas emissions for the business as usual scenario in the power, transport, and industry sectors, by 2030. With international support, it pledges a total reduction of 15%, or 36 MtCO2e, from the business as usual scenario, in the power, transport, and industry sectors, by 2030. This will be accomplished by establishing energy management and auditing systems for industry, establishing energy efficiency standards and labeling, deploying off-grid solar technology, increasing investment in rail travel infrastructure, encouraging liquid petroleum gas for cooking, increase composting and improve waste management, supporting reforesting and afforestation, and encouraging low-emissions agriculture. Adaptation: For Bangladesh, Climate change adaptation is urgent, a goal it has been pursuing for some time, and an effort that requires additional external funding and technical support. Adaptation priorities include: improving early warming for natural disasters and climate events; encouraging disaster preparedness and constructing disaster shelters; developing climate resilient infrastructures, communications, and housing; river training and dredging; encouraging stress tolerant agriculture; and addressing the health impacts of climate change. All of these actions will depend on further research and increasing the capacity of individuals and institutions to adapt to climate change. International Climate and Environmental Commitments: The Paris Agreement (Party), United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (Party), Kyoto Protocol to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (Party), United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (Party), Convention on Biological Diversity (Party), Convention on the International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Flora and Fauna (Party), Convention on Wetlands of International Importance Especially as Waterfowl Habitat (Party)
Summary
Bangladesh is highly vulnerable to climate change. Bangladesh is a country in South Asia with high population density, low lying areas, rivers running throughout its territory, and significant vulnerability to natural disasters and extreme climate events. The country is one of the least developed globally, highly dependent on the agricultural sector. These physical and economic characteristics of Bangladesh predispose it to negative climate change impacts. Bangladesh is facing both an urgent need to adapt to climate change, as well as the challenge of mitigating emissions while achieving needed economic growth and providing for its population's socioeconomic needs.
