Tuscan people are hot!
The "heat wave" phenomenon is increasing all over Europe, affecting all sectors and increasing population mortality in summer, especially of elderly people living in urban areas. Both tourists (10 million p.a. in Tuscany) and elderly people (which represent 23% of the Tuscan population) are vulnerable to the effects of heat waves. In response to this, a case study is being carried out that addresses the following research questions: What will be the impact of climate change and heat waves on the Tuscan population and tourists? How should the health and civil protection systems be organised in order to cope with these impacts? Should the tourism strategy be reconsidered in view of climate change?
The research leading to these results has received funding from the European Community's Seventh Framework Programme (FP7/2007-2013) under grant agreement no. 244012
