Introduction

The primary aim of the Adaptation at Scale in Semi-Arid Regions (ASSAR)project is to produce future-focused and societally-relevant knowledge of potential pathways to wellbeing through adaptation.

To achieve impact in different levels of society, and across four regions, ASSAR engages with a wide spectrum of stakeholders from communities, the private sector, civil society organisations, research institutions, governments and non-governmental organisations through Transformative Scenario Planning (TSP).

TSP is an approach that brings concerned stakeholders from different, often conflicting, perspectives together. People work discuss pressing sets of problems to build stories that illustrate a range of potential futures that could come from taking different paths. By doing this, the people involved learn more about their present situation, and what dynamics in a specific situation are serving to help or hinder progress toward a more equitably and climate resilient future.

As part of the ASSAR project, a group of stakeholders from Ghana’s government, civil society, private and academic sectors met in Upper West Region’s capital town of Wa to discuss the future of agriculture and food in the region. Stakeholders tackled this difficult issue by turning to Transformative Scenario Planning (TSP), a unique approach developed by Reos Partners, which encourages people from diverse, and often conflicting, perspectives to imagine ways that the future can be changed, and to identify the leverage points that can facilitate this change.

Transformative Scenario Planning in Ghana – Part 2

In the Upper West Region of Ghana, there are pressing challenges for agriculture and food. These include: climate variability; food insecurity; land tenure issues; constrained access to credit, water, farm inputs, markets and storage; and the lack of political commitment.

To bring fresh thinking on how to tackle these challenges, ASSAR use the Transformative Scenario Planning (TSP) approach to bring together stakeholders from diverse and often conflicting perspectives and transforms their thinking around complex issues.

This video outlines the four different scenarios that were developed by stakeholders at the first TSP workshop held in June 2016. The scenarios were built around two key driving forces that workshop participants thought were the most influential: access to water and political commitment.
