Water For Hydropower

Submitted by Anna Taylor 2nd October 2009 22:25

The EID Powerhouse Forebay provides hydropower and also regulates water for consumptive supply into El Dorado Irrigation District's Main canal

SEI has established collaboration with the El Dorado Irrigation District, a water purveyor on the western slope of the Sierra Nevada Mountains, to investigate the potential impacts of climate change on a water system that depends to a large degree on the accumulation of snow at high elevation during the winter and the progressive melting of this snow during the late spring and early summer.

The EID Powerhouse was one of the sites used for impact analysis using the WEAP programme. Water for hydropower is collected in the forested, high elevation regions, sent through powerhouses located further downstream and delivered to the Pacific Gas & Electric Company (PG&E) transmission and distribution system, to satisfy California’s demand for electricity.
