The 9th International Conference on Community-Based Adaptation (CBA9) took place in Nairobi, Kenya, from April 24-30 2015. The CBA series of conferences focus on the latest developments in community-based adaptation to climate change. The theme of this year’s event was “Measuring and enhancing effective adaptation”, and all the posters presented at the conference were summaries of projects related to the conference theme. This poster is one of the posters featured at the conference. For more information about CBA9, visit: www.cba9.org. Project Overview:

USAID funded Climate Change Adaptation Project in the Lesotho Highlands. The project aimed to:

  • Develop innovative adaptation strategies to enhance resilience of livelihoods and ecosystems
  • Build the capacities of local communities, NGO networks and government departments to understand and adapt to the likely impacts of climate change

Need for Adaption in Lesotho

Climate change could have severe consequences for both the people and natural environment in the Lesotho Highlands. Adaptation is therefore critical for maintaining the resilience of the highly resource-dependent communities, as well as to prevent the degradation of ecosystems and the loss of the services they provide which are critical for maintaining human well-being.

Adapt-Able Game

A component of the project was the development of a gaming tool to aid local communities in adapting to climate change. The Adapt-Able game simulates reality, enacts climate change scenarios and provides insight on alternative technologies and practices that build resilience. Adapt-Able achieves this by:

  • Providing an understanding of climate change
  • Demonstrating how climatic changes are likely to affect local communities
  • Introducing innovative and appropriate practices and technologies that build resilience to climate change
  • Creating a fun, interactive environment for sharing of experiences and discussion

The main goal of Adapt-Able is to provide community driven innovation committees with a tool to continue the momentum of the project. Therefore the game provided a platform to ‘hand-over’ responsibility to committees to enhance local capacity and move themselves towards effective climate change adaptation.

Benefits of the game

Empowers highly vulnerable, resource dependent communities

  • Easy to facilitate, understand and play
  • Suitable for a range of ages
  • Simple to introduce additional innovative techniques
  • Sets the tone for discussion and experience sharing to aid community based adaptation
