Community Resilience To Climate Change in Nepal

Programme overview

This programme’s goal is to enhance adaptive capacity and resilience of our impact group to climate variability and change through synergies between land use based adaptation and mitigation.

As the impacts of climate change are becoming more pronounced, it is crucial that all development actions become climate smart. This is especially true of agriculture in Nepal, as it is mostly dependent on weather patterns that have become more unpredictable than in the past. This programme’s research focuses on generating and mainstreaming tools that enable vulnerable communities and other stakeholders to understand their risks and make comprehensive adaptation and development plans. It will also engage in community level adaptation and generate grassroots level evidence to influence national and international climate policy.

We will invest in research focused on climate change issues, from assessing vulnerabilities and identifying and improving adaptation options to refining methodologies for adaptation planning. Our focus will be on developing capacities for community adaptation to climate change. This will contribute to continuous learning and capacity building for both LI-BIRD and our partners.

The key interventions in this pathway will include, but not be limited to, the following:

  • Assess vulnerability to and impacts of climate change on ecosystems, biodiversity, agriculture and human livelihoods.
  • Identify, assess, improve and validate adaptation and mitigation options.
  • Study the sequestration potential of resilient farming practices.
  • Refine the methods and tools for adaptation planning.
Mainstream climate smart decision making and development. The level of awareness on climate change has increased significantly in recent years in Nepal. Engagement of civil society organizations through the NGO Group on Climate Change, of which LI-BIRD is the Secretariat, has contributed to this. But there is still limited capacity in how to systematically adapt to climate change and embark on the path of climate smart development.

The key interventions in this pathway will include, but not be limited to, the following:

  • Increase awareness and orientation on climate change for various stakeholders.
  • Train development practitioners in vulnerability assessment and adaptation planning.
  • Build community capacity for climate change adaptation planning through climate adaptation schools.
  • Generate funds to support small scale climate change adaptation in the vulnerable areas prioritized by the country’s National Adaptation Plan of Action (NAPA).
  • Facilitate policy dialogue and advocacy on climate change with civil society organizations of Nepal.
