Cemaden's mission is to carry out the monitoring of natural hazards in risk areas in municipalities susceptible to natural disasters, as well as to conduct research and technological innovations that can contribute to the improvement of its early warning system, with the ultimate goal of reducing the number of fatalities and material damage across the country. It's main areas of work are:
- Monitoring
- Research and Development
- Disaster Risk Reduction
The organisation also has an Observational Network incuding weather radas, geotechnical sensors, agrometeorological as well as hydrological stations, and an instrumentation, management and infrastructure team.
The National Center for Monitoring and Early Warning of Natural Disasters (CEMADEN) linked to the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation of Brazil (MCTI), implements, on national level, the continuous monitoring of adverse hydro meteorological and climate conditions, which may trigger processes that produce imminent risk of natural disasters occurrence. The centre is not only related with the hard science. Information on vulnerability and exposure are also considered when an EW is issued. The organisation has a strong collaboration with UKMet, NOAA, IIASA, BRICS Institutions and are very interested in establishing a collaboration with other institutions.
