A customised two-day training programme was designed, following a training needs assessment of participants, to provide an introduction to key concepts and methods to inform an adaptation planning process. The training has been developed and delivered to as part of a project to build adaptive capacity in Lombok, an Indonesian island, and in the Province of Negros Oriental, in thePhilippines. The training began with an introduction to stakeholder engagement, including exercises designed to highlight the different viewpoints of stakeholder groups and the level of influence of different groups. This was followed by a session on vulnerability assessment, using the livelihood-exposure matrix as a way of identifying key climate vulnerabilities.

The second day started with an introduction to climate analysis and uncertainty, highlighting different sources of data, and extending the livelihood exposure matrix from Day 1 to assess future vulnerability. In the second part of the day the weADAPT knowledge base was introduced as a resource for the community, and a webinar session was held to test whether this method could be used for follow-up training sessions.

The slides used in each session are available to view below. For more information on training see our theme on climate adaptation training.

Training module on stakeholder engagement

This session explained the importance of stakeholder engagement, as a step to identify how stakeholders have the knowledge, resources and networks to engage in climate adaptation planning. Two exercises were included.

Training module on vulnerability assessment (I)

This module introduces the concepts around vulnerability, definitions and frameworks and the links between livelihood and vulnerability. A livelihood-exposure density matrix exercise is introduced. Tools and resources for assessment are also identified.

Training module vulnerability assessment (II)

This module illustrates the concepts of vulnerability by presenting a detailed case with vulnerability maps, and some beautiful photographs included, of a vulnerability assessment of paddy rice production in Bali.

Training module on climate analysis (I)

The learning objectives of this module are to understand and assess the quality of climate data; develop clear messages on future changes in climate and evaluate the strengths and weaknesses of different adaptation options in regard to possible climate in the future.

Training module on climate analysis (II)

This module describes how climate variables can be linked to planning adaptation policy. It supports understanding of the important climate variables and other stresses related to livelihoods and social vulnerability.

*** The above training modules were developed to conduct a 2 day training in Lombok, Indonesia and in Dumaguete, the Philippines under a project called Strengthening climate adaptation planning through customised learning approaches. See the training modules used in Lombok translated in Bahasa here.

This project is supported by the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency, Sida, through Programme Support for the Stockholm Environment Institute.
