Oxford Adaptation Academy

The Oxford Adaptation Academy is a joint venture between the Smith School of Enterprise and the Environment at Oxford University, and the Global Climate Adaptation Partnership.

Since 2010 it has successfully offered a participant driven, professional training programme designed around practice. The annual three week course is normally held in August.

The Academy exposes climate practitioners to the links between climate science, vulnerability and decision making. This is an opportunity to explore your role, raise the bar on your own thinking and learn first-hand from expert practitioners.

The Academy integrates three central learning themes:

  • Participants' role as change makers, in their own careers and organisations
  • Adaptation as a process linking climate science, vulnerability and decision making
  • Technical skills in analysing adaptation options and project development

Typically participants represent different sectors in the climate community.  Organizations sending participants include:

UN Agencies: UNFCCC, UNEP and UNDP; Finance: IDB, AFDB, ADB; NGOs: Practical Action Nepal; Government: Kenya Agricultural Research Institute, Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development of Vietnam

Others, self-funding, as part of career development

Mehjabeen Abidi-Habib closes Adaptation Academy 2014

"The Oxford Adaptation Academy was a unique opportunity to explore how to deliver effective climate finance to achieve resilience in the private sector. As a facility coordinator, having a thorough understanding of climate uncertainty, funding modalities and analytical tools is essential. The three weeks in Oxford are change-making."

Carlos Sanchez, Inter-American Development Bank (2014)

“The Academy enriched my knowledge of a holistic approach to adaptation: how socio-economic, institutional, and theory of change applies. My skills in stakeholder analysis, project design are improved.”

Pham Thi Dung, Ministry of Agriculture & Rural Development, Vietnam (2013)
